Capital is never neutral. It can accelerate extraction, or it can help repair the natural, social and community systems on which long-term value depends. 义利合一—the alignment of righteousness and benefit— offers a different view of capital: ethical responsibility and financial return need not be opposing forces when governance, incentives and time horizons are properly designed. Drawing on China’s experience in rural development, ecological restoration and long-term capital deployment, this session explores the shift from patient capital to regenerative capital. Voices from family offices, investment institutions and mission-driven funds will examine how ecological and social value can enter investment logic through blended finance, ecological compensation, natural-capital accounting and community benefit-sharing. The session will also confront practical challenges—long return periods, difficult measurement and the unequal distribution of costs and benefits—asking how capital can maintain financial discipline while becoming a force that restores, rather than depletes, the systems it depends on.
