The value of nature and people to our economy is no longer in dispute. We now have Protocols, frameworks and tools that make it possible to measure and value the full range of value that sustains economies and communities. Disclosure standards are maturing. Nature-finance initiatives are multiplying. The ability to identify value creation and destruction is now stronger than it has ever been.
Yet institutional action remains fragmented — and Singapore sits at the heart of this challenge.
As a financial centre channelling capital across some of the world's most ecologically significant landscapes and seascapes, and as a city-state whose own prosperity is intimately connected to the health of regional food systems, coastal ecosystems and ocean corridors, Singapore is both a microcosm of the problem and a credible convener of its solution.
Governments in the region measure national progress through one set of indicators. Businesses account for performance through another. Investors interpret risk and return through a third. Development institutions, philanthropies, and communities operate with different time horizons, evidence requirements and definitions of success. One institution funds restoration while another continues to finance the drivers of degradation.
The difficulty is therefore no longer primarily technical. It is multilateral. The Capitals Coalition, originally constituted in Singapore, has led the global harmonization and consolidation of impact valuation over the last 15 years and will be convening this closed-door high-level session to asks what becomes possible when we act together.
The proposed outcome is a focused platform through which a small group of governments, financial institutions, businesses and communities test how integrated value changes real decisions across connected rural and ocean systems in the Asia-Pacific region.
