Investing in Regenerative Landscapes Beyond Short-Term Returns

About this session

Healthy landscapes are becoming increasingly important to long-term economic performance. Forest loss, biodiversity decline, water stress, soil degradation and climate change can disrupt supply chains, reduce productivity, increase business costs and weaken the value of long-term investments. But restoring landscapes takes decades, while many investment decisions are still driven by much shorter financial horizons.

This creates an important challenge for investors, governments and businesses. How can capital support long-term landscape transitions while still meeting expectations around risk, returns and accountability? As financial institutions pay greater attention to climate- and nature-related risks, ideas such as stewardship, fiduciary responsibility and long-term value creation are becoming central to investment decisions. Increasingly, investors are recognising that protecting natural and social systems is essential to protecting financial value over time.

This lab explores how investors, governments, companies and partners can better align finance with long-term landscape resilience. Drawing on practical examples from Indonesia and across ASEAN, participants will examine approaches to landscape investment, blended finance, stewardship and enabling policy. The discussion will focus on how different forms of capital can work together to support landscape restoration, regenerative production, resilient supply chains and community stewardship while delivering outcomes that are both environmentally meaningful and financially credible.
