Design and Consciousness: How the spaces we build shapes the states we access

Thu, 10 Sep 2026 11:40 AM – 12:20 PM SGT Lab 9
About this session

Design is usually an afterthought in wellness. Decoration that gestures at the ethos of a project without being the heart of it. But what if design is not just part of the experience, but the thing that makes an environment capable of holding a person at all?

David Hans-Barker has meditated and studied contemplative practice for 27 years. He is the founder and designer of The Istana in Uluwatu, which introduced the concept of the Social Wellness Club to the world. He argues that design is the form that allows the substance of an experience to exist, and that it is the missing component in how business people build spaces. He traces how the Istana was conceived, what he set out to test, what he has observed in the people who pass through it, and the state they carry back out.
