Keynote Address: The Psychology of Relating

Thu, 10 Sep 2026 9:35 AM – 10:15 AM SGT Lab 9

Every organisation reflects the consciousness of the people who create it. Who must we become before we can build a world that truly flourishes?

About this session

If love is to become infrastructure, it must first become a way of being. Every organisation and community reflects the quality of human consciousness that sustains it. Before asking how to build flourishing systems, we must ask who the human attempting to build them is. Love cannot become infrastructure until the self becomes inhabitable, until we commit to a relationship with ourselves that can hold complexity and paradox alongside rule-bound causality. Human development begins with noticing ourselves, bearing uncertainty without collapsing into control, and living deliberately rather than reacting habitually. Through existential psychology, this keynote explores how being seen, recognised and accepted shapes our capacity for authentic relationships, psychological safety and impactful leadership. It proposes that co-regulation, trust and compassionate cultures begin within individuals who inhabit themselves with integrity. To be 'anxious in the right way' drives this individuation: choosing, again and again, to become at one with oneself. At its heart is the lifelong task of restoring what neglect, whether personal, organisational or cultural, has interrupted in our capacity to become fully alive. Love begins not with sentiment but with presence: the courage to remain aware of being aware and, from that place, to recognise another.
