For decades, catalytic philanthropy has moved largely in one direction: capital and frameworks flowing from Europe and America into Asia, through intermediaries, with local geographies consulted but rarely centred as protagonists. That model produced real impact, but it also produced a persistent asymmetry, one increasingly out of step with where the field is heading.
Place-based transformation, funding the coherence of a place across ecology, capital, community, livelihood, culture and governance, over the time horizons real change requires, cannot be built on a one-way pipeline. It requires a two-way corridor.
This roundtable brings together institutions converging on that same insight from different vantage points: philanthropic infrastructure builders, mature European foundations, family-capital networks, Asian climate and place-based intermediaries, and global philanthropy convenors. Together, they are exploring how European institutional capital can flow into Asian place-based work not as a delivery contract, but as genuine co-authorship, while models like multi-generational family stewardship, blended family-capital structures, and community-anchored deployment flow back westward.
The session's goal is concrete: move from framing to a first pilot, a working sketch of where a corridor deploys, what a first year commits to, and how two-way learning is designed in from day one.
