ROUNDTABLE

From Maritime to Port Ecosystem: Futureproofing Ocean Industries for a Resilient Blue Economy

About this session

The maritime sector sits at the centre of the ocean economy, with Asia playing an especially significant role — according to UNCTAD, the region accounts for nearly 40% of global containerised trade volumes. Shipping, ports, logistics, shipyards, marine insurance, offshore infrastructure and seafood supply chains shape how the ocean is used, connected, financed and governed. Yet maritime transition is often discussed separately from ocean regeneration.

This roundtable brings maritime and port ecosystems into the conversation as system actors, not peripheral stakeholders. It asks how industries already operating at scale on the ocean can move from reducing harm toward enabling regeneration that supports nature, people and long-term prosperity — ports as hubs for clean energy and circular economy, shipping companies enabling traceable supply chains, infrastructure owners supporting scalable blue economy models, and insurers and classification bodies setting standards for safer, cleaner operations.

When these actors collaborate around a shared vision, they can unlock better financing, stronger policy dialogue and joint innovation. The session builds awareness of shared constraints and practical mechanisms for collaboration, asking how the industry can become a true engine of the blue economy, and what role Asia can play given its central position in global trade.
