Storytelling for Impact: A Master Class with National Geographic Storytellers Collective

Wed, 9 Sep 2026 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM SGT Lab 2

How can we turn our work into a story that moves people to action?

About this session

The right story can change how people see the world and how they act in it. It's a belief the National Geographic Society was built on, and why we joined At One Impact Week this year as an Ecosystem Partner: to help illuminate both the gravity of the challenges we face and the power of collective action, moving people toward awareness to shared responsibility and action. Led by award-winning National Geographic Explorers, this 90-minute master class teaches the craft of turning the work you do into a story people remember, feel, and act on.

Shin Arunrugstichai is a photojournalist and marine biologist who has spent his career covering conservation stories. His photographs have been published in National Geographic, the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Guardian, among others. Dr. Jason Gulley is a research geologist and photographer with over two decades of cave diving experience. He has documented expeditions across the globe, most recently publishing photos in the New York Times of a flooded cave system in Kentucky.

Drawing on their own expeditions, the Explorers will show you practical techniques for developing narrative structure, building emotional resonance, and transforming raw experience into a story that moves people. The session closes with a hands-on segment where you define your story: your audience, your goal, and the format it should take, whether that's a photo essay, a presentation, or a short film. You'll leave with the techniques to tell your story in its most impactful form, and the confidence to turn your work into a catalyst for change.
