Kurnia (Nia) Khairani

As Director of ALeRT (Alliance of Integrated Forest Conservation) since 2023, Kurnia Khairani leads a biodiversity conservation program focused on critical landscapes such as Ujung Kulon National Park, the last stronghold of the Javan rhinoceros, and Way Kambas National Park, home to the Sumatran elephant, Sumatran tiger, and other endangered wildlife.

She is also the Vice Chairman of the IUCN Asian Rhino Specialist Group. She is a veterinarian trained at Bogor Agricultural Institute with postdoctoral experience at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, and has more than a decade of experience in conservation programs in Indonesia, especially endangered species management, like the Javan and Sumatran rhino program.

Her work spans population management strategies, habitat protection, restoration, one health approach, and advancing science-based solutions, including reproductive technologies, to support long-term species conservation. She has contributed to multiple scientific publications on wildlife health, ecology, and conservation, and has led collaborations among government agencies, NGOs, academic institutions, and international partners to protect Indonesia’s biodiversity and its ecosystems.
